SUBJ: Infant to Childhood Education

Science magazine just had a special section devoted to "Laying the Foundation for Lifetime Learning". A series of 10 articles describe what is known about how early and specific physical and mental exercises, like having a child walk along a line on the floor, have lifetime benefits in executive brain function, learning and enjoying reading and mathematics, and other critical skills not easily acquired when older. This is highly recommended reading for parents and grandparents, available at most public libraries. See the link at my website:

Thoreau's three truths: "that this earth is a garden of delights; that the world crowds round the individual, leaving him no vista, and shuts out the beauty of the earth; and that the wholesome wants of man are few."
