SUBJ: Nov Nutrition notes from Roc, Nutrition investigator

From Science
7 Oct pg 69 - Some of the main environmental exposures related to the diabetes and obesity epidemics: Antibiotic usage, diet of processed foods, total caloric intake, sedentary behavior, ambient temperature, maternal disease and nutrition, sleep debt, chronic inflammation.

28 Oct pg 430
Reducing foam cells in your blood (which vitamins C and E do) reduces blood clots causing heart disease and stroke. Cells enter a state of senescence in response to certain stresses. Childs et al. examined the role of senescent lipid-loaded macrophages (so-called “foam cells”) in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. At early stages of atherosclerosis, senescent foam cells promoted the expression of inflammatory cytokines. At later stages, they promoted the expression of matrix metalloproteases implicated in the rupture of atherosclerotic plaque, which can lead to blood clots. Experimental removal of the senescent cells had beneficial effects at both stages of the disease.

25 Nov pg 986 - Circadian rhythms - Irregular or insufficient sleep causes depression, obesity, autoimmune disease, diabetes, brain degeneration, etc. pg 1004 - How poor sleep causes brain degeneration. pg 956 -Parkinson’s progression is caused by misfolded proteins.  Try blueberry/green tea diet 4 to slow mental degeneration.

Cocoa consumption helps your circulatory system.  Regardless of frequency, habitual cocoa intake reduces central and peripheral arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women.

Individuals with a normal BMI can have apnea, including severe apnea. Severe obesity (BMI >40) is almost always associated with apnea when symptoms are present.

For mature readers:
Depression at age 65 linked to low fish oil and niacin intake - 130 subjects age 65, half with depression. The incidence of falls and poor quality of life may be partially associated with the presence of depression. The inappropriate intake of selected nutrients may impair the functioning and quality of life of older adults with depression, such as the excess consumption of sucrose and insufficient consumption of protein, fiber, eicosapentaenoic acid, niacin and vitamin B6.

Keep a healthy attitude. If older men complain of fatigue, it is a risk factor for impaired mobility.

Successful aging included engagement, optimism and/or positive attitude, resilience, spirituality and/or religiosity, self-efficacy and/or self-esteem, and gerotranscendence.
