Getting 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily is strongly justified. The Journal of Inflammation Research reported that low levels of vitamin D are associated with much higher levels of pro-inflammation markers in the blood, which can contribute to arthritis, heart disease, etc. “Association between levels of vitamin D and inflammatory markers in healthy women”
Fountain of youth pill is too expensive, but here are links to my notes on extending healthspan. READER QUESTION: I saw an ad “Elysium Health hasn't discovered the fountain of youth, but their new supplement—with the backing of some of the world's foremost authorities on aging—could change how you get older.” Is this so?
ROC ANSWER: I read the article. The Elysium product contains some compounds I take. Taking the two key ingredients is much less expensive than Elysium's product. I have been taking resveratrol for years, know the man who patented it, and have a link for it at my website. It does not extend lifespan, but may help healthspan. I began taking vitamin B3, niacin, about 6 months ago, when research showed its levels decline with age. It is key to NAD+, the second ingredient in the Elysium product.
There is a protein currently in human clinical trials that actually does reverse aging of the brain, heart, and muscles, and I am excited to see the results of those trials when they are reported. Outcome of clinical trial is expected in June, 2016. And here is a TED talk on "How young blood might help reverse aging. Liposomal vitamin C may cure many cancers but is not yet fully understood. READER QUESTION: What is your opinion of lypo-C? It comes in 1000mg packs of sodium ascorbate in a lypospheric solution, supposedly resulting in dramatically increased absorption and cellular utilization. What is your opinion and how would this form of vitamin C alter your suggestion of taking 500mg of vitamin C twice a day? Thanks for your advice,
ROC ANSWER: Vitamin C is also called ascorbic acid (AA). Taking a new formulation of AA, formally named liposomal ascorbate, is able to raise serum levels of AA as much as intravenous AA does. 500mg AA raises serum levels to 0.1mM, good for health as an antioxidant. Liposomal AA raises levels above 1mM, where AA becomes a prooxidant, which generates hydrogen peroxide, which may kill cancer cells without harming normal cells.
However, Lypo-C advertises itself with words making it sound legitimate, but I can find no evidence to support that. The Science report is for AA somehow involved with DHA, but I have been unable to find how it is synthesized. And there is no need to take more than 500mg AA twice a day, except for at the first sign of a cold. Taking that dose of 1,000mg AA BID more than a few days is at the hazardous level of AA ingestion. The only time to consider taking more is if you have cancer, and then you need to find an expert on cancer and AA. I am working with two of those experts, and neither one is confident yet about how to use legitimate liposomal AA, which Lypo-C is not!
