How nice that last night in his State of the Union address, Barack Obama announced a push to finally win the war on cancer, as I was finishing a grant proposal to end the war on superficial bladder cancer recurrence with vitamin C.

HIGHLIGHTS: Eating dark chocolate daily reduces wrinkles and skin aging in mature women. Women in age range: 43–86 y consumed 320 mg total cocoa flavanols/d for 24 weeks. In moderately photo-aged women, regular cocoa flavanol consumption had positive effects on facial wrinkles and elasticity. Cocoa flavanol supplementation may contribute to the prevention of the progression of photo-aging.

Eating more often increases appetite - The results from this study in 12 healthy adults do not support the popularized notion that small, frequent meals help to decrease overall appetite

Eating more protein for breakfast and lunch increases lean-body mass in mature people - Protein supplementation at breakfast and lunch for 24 wk in healthy older adults resulted in a positive (+0.6 kg) difference in LTM compared with an isoenergetic, nonnitrogenous maltodextrin control. These observations suggest that an optimized and balanced distribution of meal protein intakes could be beneficial in the preservation of lean tissue mass in the elderly.

FOR PREGNANCY: In rats, a high protein diet during gestation and lactation reduces obesity in offspring

If you are having trouble getting pregnant, discuss this data on vitamins with your doctor. Serum Antioxidants Are Associated with Serum Reproductive Hormones and Ovulation among Healthy Women. Serum antioxidant concentrations varied across the menstrual cycle. Retinol and α-tocopherol were associated with higher estradiol and testosterone. Ascorbic acid was associated with higher progesterone and with lower follicle-stimulating hormone. The ratio of α- to γ-tocopherol was associated with an increased risk of anovulation.

REMINDERS: Nuts have 22% fewer calories than labels state (and at least a handful every day substantially improves your health).

Total and Full-Fat, but Not Low-Fat, Dairy Product Intakes are Inversely Associated with Metabolic Syndrome in Adults. Growing evidence suggests that dairy products may have beneficial cardiometabolic effects. The current guidelines, however, limit the intake of full-fat dairy products.
