More reasons to eat yogurt

BACKGROUND: Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria. Lots of evidence shows they support a healthy microbiome, a key to a great healthspan.  One of the best sources of probiotics is yogurt (or yoghurt). Roc finds kefir more convenient, a liquid yogurt convenient to take a swig of. One main bacterium is Lactobacillus casei, which can be obtained simply by eating yogurt.

REASONS:

  1. PREVENTS ULCERS: Supplementing with Lactobacillus- and Bifidobacterium-containing yogurt (AB-yogurt) was shown to improve the rates of eradication of H. pylori in humans. Conclusion: Regular intake of yogurt containing Bb12 and La5 effectively suppressed H. pylori infection in humans
  2. REDUCES RISK OF ECZEMA AND ALLERGY IN BABIES- Another symposiumwas held on Probiotics, which are micro-organisms like bacteria and yeast \ that keep our digestive system functioning properly. Two highlights: When expectant mothers and babies eat yogurt, infants have only half the risk of developing allergies and eczema.
  3. REDUCES UPSET STOMACH- And when adults eat yogurt regularly, their risk of ulcers and gastritis decreases significantly.
  4. REDUCES RISK OF COLON CANCER – One that is especially beneficial is yogurt. Probiotics like those in yogurt protect from colon cancer, in addition to helping digest lactose.
  5. BOOSTS IMMUNE SYSTEM – A 2007 study shows that eating yogurt strengthens our immune system.
  6. HELPS WITH WEIGHT CONTROL – Plus yogurt is low in energy density, meaning you can eat more while getting fewer calories, so it helps with weight control.
  7. RESTORES COLON AFTER ANTIBIOTICS – I do not have a reference for this. But antibiotics kill off many important bacteria that populate your colon and elsewhere. Eating yogurt during and after taking antibiotics helps to repopulate those parts of your body with healthful bacteria, reducing risk of harmful infections.
