Happy Thanksgiving, wherever in the world you are. Being grateful is helpful for longevity and health.

LONG NOTES

Babies from 6 to 9 months will eat anything and learn to like it.  They may scream at the first bite, but will be fine with the next one. Then they will eat dark green veggies when older.  The New Yorker

Toward a Unified Theory of Aging (Experimental Gerontology 124 (2019) 110627) is a compelling article explaining the key cause of aging is mitochondrial DNA fragments getting to the nucleus. Fortunately, the 2 main causes of this are free radicals and protein misfolding. Both of these hazardous causes of aging are lessened by taking Mito-C!

AARP newsletter had an article claiming the main cause of aging is inflammation (TRUE). A major cause of inflammation is protein misfolding. An easy way to reduce protein misfolding is my supplement Mito-C you can purchase here.

Dec Consumer Reports Supplement Article trivia: Sales of $46 billion in US to 68% of people. 54% take a sup daily.  71% believe they are safe (many are not). 26% of elderly take 6 or more daily.  72% of those born from 1981 to 1996 take 1 to 3 daily. There are more than 80,000 different sups. Top choices are vitamins, fish oil, calcium (which is hazardous for most people), and probiotics. 38% have taken a botanical. 48% believe FDA tests them (FALSE). Black cohosh may help treat menopausal symptoms. Green tea extract may help digestion and weight loss.

To strengthen your immune system which declines with age, get 7 to 9 hrs of sleep, increase fish intake, dark leafy greens, fruit, vitamin C, avoid soda, processed meats, too much alcohol – men 2 drinks okay, women 1.

The New Yorker 10/28/19 pg 83 reviews the book “Good Habits, Bad Habits” by Wendy Wood on scientific research about how to change habits. I have studied how to do this for decades, and this is the first time I have seen decent research about how to succeed.  1. Come up with new rewards to replace old ones – e.g. take a walk as a reward rather than eating a donut 2. Use process of elimination to determine what drives the behavior – is it sugar of a snack or taking a break from work that you need.

It used to be that osteoarthritis was thought of as simply the abrasion of the smooth cartilage allowing a frictionless contacting of bones, now we realize that as with many diseases of aging, it has its origin in inflammation. It would seem that one major source of that inflammation are senescent cells present in the synovium and removing the source allows the joint to heal. That is big news for the people I know with knee problems. https://acrabstracts.org/abstract/safety-tolerability-pharmacokinetics-and-clinical-outcomes-following-single-dose-ia-administration-of-ubx0101-a-senolytic-mdm2-p53-interaction-inhibitor-in-patients-with-knee-oa/

High intensity exercise in humans increases phosphorylated RPN6, which might increase proteasome activity, and increase the turnover of damaged proteins.

100,000,000 people worldwide take metformin now. Metformin use results in decreased cancer incidence and severity. Metformin also reduces other age related diseases.

NAD+ levels decrease in many tissues during aging. NAD+ restoration reverses aging phenotypes. This can be helped by taking niacin. Inflammation increases during aging. Is there a connection between drop in NAD+ with increase in inflammation?

Young blood apparently does not help elderly.  Heterochronic Parabiosis: Old Blood Attenuates Mitochondrial Bioenergetics of Young Mice. Old plasma reduces respiration in young muscle. Looking at total mitochondrial area, the young mice with old plasma have shorter and smaller mitochondria. But old mice with young plasma don’t benefit much.

Inducers of Nrf2 (which is good for you) include curcumin and cinnamon aldehyde.
