What Do We Really Know About Calories?

by Roc (click here for full post)

I thought you would be interested in what legitimate research on nutrition looks like.  I’ll send a review of the symposium when it is published:

Mark your calendars for Friday, April 20, (San Diego) to attend “What Do We Really Know about Whole Foods Digestibility and Energy Values? This satellite symposium will explore approaches for more accurately determining energy values for plant-based foods. Organized and supported by the Almond Board of California, this half-day event prior to ASN’s Scientific Sessions & Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology 2012 will explain why you shouldn’t judge a food by its form, and the ins and outs of a food’s energy values.

The session is 1:00-5:00 pm in the ASN headquarters hotel, the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, Indigo Ballroom G.  Registration is FREE and open to the public; registration for EB 2012 is not required to attend the satellite symposium. Continuing Professional Education credits for dietitians will be provided.

Co-Chairs:
Dr. Michael Falk, Executive Director, LSRO, Bethesda, MD
Dr. Martin Wickham, Director of Nutrition, Leatherhead Food Research, UK

Speakers & Topics:
Dr. Peter Ellis, Kings College, London UK; The role of cell walls in regulating the bioaccessibility and digestion of macronutrients in plant foods
Dr. Richard Mattes, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN; You can’t judge a food by its form – effects on ingestive behavior & metabolism
Dr. David Baer, USDA ARS, Beltsville, MD; The ins and outs of the energy value of food

Dr. Gary Foster, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA; Calories or type of calories for weight loss

In addition to the satellite program, there will be eight related posters at ASN’s 2012 annual meeting. Nutrition posters are displayed in the Exhibit Hall across from ASN’s booth, #529. The EB Itinerary Builder is live and you can create your daily schedule to include these posters!
