Response to reader questions – calcium and protein

Respond to nut reader question about J Nutrition Nov 2011:

Dear Roc, Besides weight loss, garlic has the added advantage of keeping vampires at bay. Please tell me, is there such thing as too much protein? And where do we get calcium if not in milk?

1) Too much protein – In general, consuming more than 30% of calories as protein can be hazardous.  A high protein diet is considered one of the best for weight loss, but since “normal” protein diet contains 15% protein, there’s a big margin there.  One reason the Atkin’s Diet is hazardous is that eating too much protein causes production of excess ketones that are toxic.

2) Calcium sources – Here’s sources for every nutrient under the sun.  For calcium, try cereals, soy and rice milk, spinach, salmon.
