SUBJ: “Can Science Cure Death? It sure looks like It”

SUBtitle: What Exercise Does; Superfoods for immunity

I started teaching science to Spanish-speaking high school students Sept 2. After a summer studying Spanish and working out for the triathlon, it’s great to get back to working and inhaling youthful pheromones (and optimism and energy and enthusiasm).

LONG NOTES:

Apple News runs headline “Can Science Cure Death? It sure looks like It” (July 2021)

The human maximum lifespan is about 120 years.  For bowhead whales, the maximum lifespan is 211 years! bowhead whales over-express an enzyme called cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRBP), which among other things aggressively repairs double-breaks in DNA.  This raises another interesting question that some in GRG may be able to answer: do the super-centenerians among us have more CIRBP in their bloodstreams than the rest of us?

AARP: What Exercise Does: You lose muscle mass as you get older, and exercise can help you rebuild it. Muscles also burn more calories than fat, even at rest, which will offset your slowing metabolism. Exercise helps stop, delay, and sometimes improve serious illnesses like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, and osteoporosis. It can help your brain stay sharp and keep you from falling into a funk.

AARP-8 superfoods for immunity: yogurt, garlic, blueberries, kiwi, mushrooms, salmon, beans, tea

Animal and human studies show that vitamin E, vitamin D, and zinc are known to be especially important in maintaining the immune function in the elderly. National health surveys show that 35-45% of participants >60 years of age have inadequate zinc intakes.

I propose that nutrients required for the function of longevity proteins constitute a class of vitamins that are here named “longevity vitamins.” The evidence for classifying taurine as a conditional vitamin, and the following 10 compounds as putative longevity vitamins, is reviewed: the fungal antioxidant ergothioneine; the bacterial metabolites pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) and queuine; and the plant antioxidant carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene, α- and β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, and the marine carotenoid astaxanthin.

I suggest that many such nutrients play a dual role for both survival and longevity.

Some 2.3 million Israelis have now had a coronavirus booster. It is 95% effective against infection and available to all Israelis vaccinated over 5 months ago. Serious case numbers have declined and are nearly negligible in those who have been triple-vaccinated.

A 4-year research initiative to find algae-sourced compounds to help Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) sufferers is being conducted.  [Note that I supplement with blue-green algae every day.]

Add 4.7 years to your life by maintaining omega-3-index over 6.8%.

Israel’s Antidote Health is bringing a virtual Kupat Holim (health fund) to the US for the benefit of uninsured and under-insured Americans. Using a digital service and AI, Antidote Health says it can cut the costs of the service to about a tenth of what Americans pay now.
