Sept Nutrition long notes from Roc

Happy Labor Day. Here are notes on readings and 2 conferences I read this month. Recall the pace of medical discovery is increasing exponentially, so there are a lot of discoveries I feel are important to mention, as the 1,000 readers of this newsletter are of all ages.

NPR Science Friday 9/7/18 – Osteocalcin, produced to make strong bones in response to exercise, reverses age-associated memory loss in experimental animals. There are 2 main forms of memory loss with age, 1) Alzheimer’s, and 2) age-associated memory loss.  They are completely unrelated, though 2) usually precedes 1). So exercise is vital to reduce memory loss with age.

Mindfulness and Nutrition are keys that often outperform medical treatment. Terry Wahls on How She Reversed Multiple Sclerosis Using the Power of Functional Medicine.

Probiotics are personal. Two studies by scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute have turned knowledge about probiotics on its head. Firstly, probiotics are only effective if your microbiome doesn’t resist the probiotics. Secondly, using probiotics alongside antibiotics is ineffective in restoring your natural microbiome.

You can view the video abstract for their paper titled “Sleep problems in university students – an intervention” here:

SLEEP onset latency is related with reduced bone mineral density in elderly people with insomnia a retrospective study

Alpha radiation destroys solid tumors safely.

Israeli leukemia treatment approved for UK children. The breakthrough CAR-T personalized leukemia therapy devised by Professor Zelig Eshhar of Israel’s Weizmann Institute (see here) is now available in the UK.  The National Health Service will fund Kymriah – the CAR-T treatment commercialized by Novartis. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/09/04/nhs-fund-game-changing-personalised-cancer-drug/

“Natural” protein to treat osteoporosis. Ben Gurion University scientists have discovered a natural protein in the body that can be tailored to treat osteoporosis. The protein can be modified to inhibit its standard bone destruction function, which avoids many of the side effects common with current treatments.

New treatment for Leishmaniasis. I reported previously (see here) on Israel’s work to combat Leishmaniasis – a deadly parasitic disease common in the Middle East. Now Professor Shulamit Michaeli, at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University, is working to commercialize a compound that in 20 minutes kills two types of Leishmania parasites.

Enzyme can prevent spinal-cord damage.  Tel Aviv University scientists have discovered an enzyme that controls blood glutamate levels and could help patients recover from spinal injuries if administered soon after an accident. Reducing the release of glutamate after a trauma enabled lesions at the injury site to regenerate.

Curcumin is a Nrf2 activator for anti-oxidant signaling. We don’t know whether constant induction is a good idea or a bad idea. We found that most organisms don’t like chronic or frequent exposure, which causes them to lose inducibility.

Methionine restriction reduces senescence – foods with lots of methionine to avoid include: High methionine foods include nutsbeeflambcheeseturkey, pork, fishshellfishsoyeggsdairy, and beans.

2017 Harvard/Paul F. Glenn Symposium on Aging

By age 50, we have half the levels of NAD+ as a young person. NMN is upstream of NAD+. We give NMN (Nicotinamide MonoNucleotide) to mice in water. It increases their NAD+ levels 20- 50%.

NMN (related to NADH)  fixes DNA repair.

Eating a low-protein, high- carbohydrate diet makes lab animals live longer. Mice on low BCAA have more lean and less fat. So body-builders have it wrong if they increase their intake of BCAAs.

Regular endurance (aerobic) exercise is beneficial for aging arteries (stiffness), and preserves or restores endothelial function with aging in men. Aerobic exercise shields aging arteries from stress-related diseases. High Intensity Interval Training is looking perhaps better than walking.

Methionine Restriction (MetR) extends lifespan. Protein restriction decreases tumors in prostate or Estrogen-positive breast cancers or triple-negative breast cancers. Simply switching from consumption of animal protein to vegetable protein results in 50% inhibition of cancer growth. This suggests that the composition of amino acids might be responsible. When they reduce the proportion of BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids, ie Leucine, Isoleucine, and valine) they get better glucose tolerance. – Hope from Rolf!! The key is the RATIO of serine and glycine to methionine, since these two amino acids react with and remove methionine.  Think about cheeses to obtain favorable ratios.  Blueberries and tea activate Nrf2 and its targets, which catalyze reactions that reduce intracellular methionine.

Metformin delays type 2 diabetes (T2D), and delays CVD in T2D. Metformin may delay cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s, and the onset of cancer. Metformin is generic, cheap, and safe.

Trehalose a disaccharide in mushrooms, and spermidine in fermented products, both reverse arterial aging in old mice.
Humans 100 g/day trehalose.

Senolytic drugs should be helpful in diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, MCI, sarcopenia, osteoarthritis, etc. Intermittent dosing can be a useful strategy.

Reader’s question: If I understand correctly, there are important benefits to eating a LOT of broccoli each day if you live in a highly polluted area.  Is that correct? YES!
