Reducing oxidative stress increases healthspan. “Epigenetics, aging, and glycolysis” Aging brings reduced fitness, disease and death. But transgenically increasing production of enzymes of glycolysis promotes lifespan and resistance to oxidative stress. Science 351:40 (6 July)


The experience of pain is substantially influenced by your attitude. Magnetic imaging of the brain is providing methods to compare the brains of people subjected to identical causes of pain. Even when the areas of the brain indicating level of pain are the same, other brain regions govern the level of pain individuals report.  “Using brain imaging to unravel the secrets of suffering” New Yorker (2 July pg 18)


Having a female on your surgical team substantially decreases mishaps.  Predominantly male surgical teams have more conflicts. About 75% of surgical mishaps are caused by interactions between a surgical team. The Economist 7 July pg 65


Being short on sleep leads to a higher death rate, but catching up on weekends (or any time)  restores health.  Science 22 June pg 1312


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced that the rate of smoking continued to drop by reaching a NEW LOW of 14% last year!!!



Tinnitus and dizziness are frequent in old age and often seen as concomitant symptoms in patients with dementia. Ginkgo biloba extract is effective at alleviating these symptoms.


Stroke treatment should be maintained for 24 hours, not just 8.  Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer has radically improved the treatment of stroke patients, just by persevering for longer. Whilst the text book states that the first 8 hours after a stroke is crucial, Sheba extends this to 24 hours. Even a 93-year-old recovered. (Jerusalem Post)


Poor diagnosis of mental disorders is improving with genetic and brain imaging data. Scientists using genetics and brain imaging are making progress providing diagnostic criteria and causes for brain disorders.  The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders can lead to misconceived diagnosis and misapplied treatments. -Science (reported in the Economist, June 30, pg 66)


Sarcopenia is defined as low muscle function as gait speed lower than 0.8 m/s and/or a grip strength lower than 26–30 kg for men and 16–20 kg for women. Some aspects that need to be considered in assessment and treatment of sarcopenia

 US approval for a new diabetes monitor.  The US FDA has given its approval to Advisor Pro, a diabetes monitor that provides insulin delivery recommendations by analyzing information from diabetes pumps and glucose monitoring.


Europe and Canada approve Israeli bone regeneration.  (TY Atid-EDI) Israel’s Datum Dental has developed OSSIX Bone – an innovative solution for bone and tissue regeneration for dentistry. It has just received the CE Mark in Europe and Health Canada approval. OSSIX Bone already has FDA clearance.


US approval for knee cartilage repair system. Meniscus (knee cartilage) tears are common for athletes, those engaged in daily sport activities, the elderly, and anyone with cartilage problems. Israel’s Arcuro Medical has developed the SuperBall™ meniscus repair system and has just received FDA clearance.

Helper T-Cells go into a huddle before fighting infection. Weizmann scientists have discovered that cells in the immune system cluster together to decide tactics, before being sent out to battle infections. These “helper T-cells” resemble American football and basketball teams that frequently go into a huddle during their games.
