I had my computer rebuilt, and unfortunately lost many files.  But there’s still lots of great new information for increasing your health span. As a caregiver, it is difficult to see so many who through accident or neglect are hanging on to life rather than enjoying it. Below are short notes. Longer summaries are in the next email

 

There are 3 equally important factors to a longer healthspan – diet, exercise, and friendships; so maintain and acquire friends – From NPR

 

Dental Xrays are only needed every 18 to 36 months, and getting them annually is just an old habit of dentists.- From AARP

 

Healthy people continue to live longer. US life expectancy has declined the past 3 years because of opioid deaths. Prior to that it had been increasing linearly from 1900 to 1960, and linearly with a lower slope til 2014.- From AARP

 

Aging muscle: Use it or lose it! People who maintain their exercise level from 55 to 79 do not lose any muscle. But most people decrease their activity level as they age. – Science 6 Apr pg 46

 

The adult brain makes just as many new neurons as mature younger brains, if the person has maintained good health through exercise, proper eating, and social relationships.- From NPR Science Friday

 

1 serving of seafood per week reduces Alzheimer’s risk by 60%. Eating leafy green vegetables regularly reduced cognitive decline by 40% over 5 year.- From Rush University study

 

With increasing numbers of older adults in the general population, anxiety will become a widespread problem in late life and one of the major causes of health care access contributing to high societal and individual costs. Finally, guidance for clinical evaluation and future research are proposed in an effort to highlight the importance of clinical assessment in the promotion of clinically relevant therapeutic choices. Resistance training for 10 weeks will lower your blood pressure. The purpose of the present study was to identify the variability of blood pressure response to a 10-week resistance training (RT) program in hypertensive and normotensive elderly women. Polypharmacy and inappropriate drug use cause numerous complications, such as cognitive impairment, frailty, falls, and functional dependence. It was demonstrated that prevalence of polypharmacy, potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and potential prescribing omissions (PPOs) could be decreased by comprehensive geriatric assessment including START/STOPP criteria in older adults. Furthermore, this will have beneficial effects on economical parameters due to decreasing drug-related health care costs.  COSTS of medication in older patients before and after comprehensive geriatric assessment
