Probiotic warning

Probiotics in the US are not regulated, and some do not contain what the label states - Initial findings of the Human Microbiome Project (HMP), funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), raise important questions about the role and variation of microorganisms within individuals and across populations. One related area of growing research and commercial interest is the development and use of probiotics, substances containing live microorganisms that have a beneficial effect when taken in sufficient quantities. Consumer demand for these products is growing, in large part because of their health and wellness claims. Although some of these claims may have merit, others do not. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no definition of probiotics. From the NY Times Nov. 5, 2013, Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem, DNA tests show many herbal supplements do not contain any of the herbs shown on the label. Herbal supplements are a $5 billion industry in the US in 2013. [Science 342:314 ]
