I rarely take a multivitamin, just when I have been having a poor diet for multiple days. Dosage: It is unclear whether to take one or not. If you eat a good diet with fruits and vegetables, it is probably unnecessary, and may be harmful. If you do take one, be especially cautious about high doses of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. They can be hazardous, especially if you eat a good diet. Unfortunately, good studies are lacking. When I was taken to dinner by the industry leaders of probably the leading brand of vitamin, they only knew of studies on starving people in China who showed benefit from a multivitamin. I explained the hazard of having 100% of the daily value of iron in their supplements, and they soon removed iron from everything but younger women’s multivitamins.

However, in 2023, it was reported that for people over 65, those who took a multivitamin were less likely to develop dementia.  This study probably included average people who have a terrible “Western” diet that does not include fruits and vegetables.
